Keeping Tooth Decay At Bay

tooth decay

NC)-Tooth decay or cavities usually occur in children and young adults but can affect people of all ages. They're the most common cause of tooth loss.

It starts when acids, formed in your mouth, eat away at your tooth enamel. Treatment for tooth decay depends on how bad it is.

Once a cavity has destroyed part of a tooth, the tooth can't repair itself. That's why it's important to see a dentist or dental hygienist regularly to have your teeth cleaned and examined. Some people benefit from fluoride treatments to help strengthen tooth enamel.

For a healthy set of teeth and gums, brushing and flossing properly offer the greatest amount of protection between regular dentist visits. Here are some helpful tips from the health experts at HealthyOntario.com:

Brushing Basics

bullet

Using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, brush for two and a half to three minutes twice a day.

bullet

Place the toothbrush at a slight angle where the teeth meet the gums.

bullet

Brush gently in a circular movement.

bullet

Brushing too hard, or using a hard toothbrush, can damage gums and teeth.

bullet

Make sure to cover all sides of every tooth.

bullet

Give your tongue and the insides of your cheeks a good scrub too.

Floss is Boss

bullet

Floss at least once a day.

bullet

Be gentle - harsh flossing damages gums.

bullet

If your gums bleed, you may be flossing too hard, or your gums may not be healthy. See your dentist for advice.

bullet

If you don't know how to floss, your dental hygienist will be more than happy to give you a lesson.
