Brush Up On Mouth Maintenance...

    - for Healthy Gums

(NC)-One of the first things people notice is your smile, but did you know that taking care of your gums and teeth can also prevent health problems?

There may be a link between oral disease and other health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and stroke. It only makes sense that infections such as gingivitis or gum disease, put a strain on the body's immune system.

For the best protection and prevention, dentists encourage us to make oral health care a priority. HealthyOntario.com recommends the following advice for good mouth maintenance that will keep you healthy:

Mouth Maintenance

1. Brush your pearly whites at least twice a day.

It takes about two and a half to three minutes to do a good job. Try brushing for the entire length of a song on the radio. Even better if it's Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin.

2. Floss is Your Friend.

Take the time to floss every day, not just the week or day before your dentist appointment. Do it while you're reading the paper or watching television.

3. Say no to your sweet tooth.

Avoid sugary foods and drinks, especially between meals. If you give in, be sure to brush right after.

4. Pass on the smokes.

Smoking not only causes unsightly stains and bad breath, it can promote serious dental problems like gum disease and oral cancer.

5. Take your gums seriously.

Keep an eye out for red, puffy, or tender gums or gums that bleed even slightly when you brush or floss. All may be signs of gum disease, the leading cause of adult tooth loss.

6. Don't wait until it hurts.

Living with pain is no picnic. Putting off a visit can lead to serious damage and unnecessary expense.
